America's commitment to Asia is not new. It is grounded in our history, our values, and our interests. It is rooted in the enduring bonds between our nations, and in the common aspirations of our peoples. Our nations share a vision of a world that is free, just, and peaceful. Our peoples share a desire for a future that is hopeful, prosperous, and secure.
In the 20th century, the United States played a critical role in Asia's peace and prosperity. We stood with our allies to defeat tyranny and secure freedom. We helped build the institutions that support stability and growth. We invested in the future of Asia, and we have reaped the benefits.
In the 21st century, we will continue to invest in Asia's future. We will work with our partners to address the challenges of our time: from economic integration to climate change, from security to human rights.
