In the last half of the nineteenth century, "capital" and "labour" were expanding and advancing together in the same direction. everybody was better off. For the first time in history, the ordinary people were not subject to the vagaries of the monsoon but could plan their year with some confidence. Still, people were being damaged. In 1841, a London doctor, Dr. John Snow, made an important discovery. He had been called in to examine patients who had been poisoned by the water supply in Soho. He found that the people who drank water from the Broad Street pump were all ill, and the people who drank from other pumps were well. He had found the source of the cholera epidemic. He had also found the way to stop it. The water supply was purified. In the same way, the water supply of the town of Cambridge, Massachusetts, was purified in 1849, and the epidemic of typhoid fever that had been raging for years was brought under control.
